My first Crossfit competition

So last Saturday I competed in my first Crossfit competition and let me start by saying I did not do well. We placed 43 out 69. Like I said, we did not do well. That being said, we had a ton of fun.

I dragged my butt out of bed at 6:15am on Saturday morning. I had my bag packed already and my boyfriend was volunteering so we packed some blankets and chairs and headed out. We got down to the event at about 7:20am, set up our area, and I met up with my partner. I would like to point out, it was about the dead in winter in south Florida, a very windy 60 degrees. That may seem warm to some of you, but I can promise you it was freezing and my Floridian blood is thin. Our team name was “Where’s The Wine” and the events were in alphabetical order so we were in the last heat every time. Our first workout was at 10:30am so we waited around till then. Our first workout was:

50 hurdle hop buy-in each
20 pull-ups (from a box)
30 meter shuttle run
20 pull-ups
20 kettlebell swings (35lbs)
30 meter shuttle run
20 pull-ups
20 kettle bell swings
20 knees over hips
30 meter shuttle run
20 pull-ups
20 kettle bell swings
20 knees over hips
20 kettle bell goblet lunges
50 deadlifts (85lbs)

We finished in 8:43. I thought that was a good time but not great. Our second event was at 12:15 and was max distance broad jump and max 1 arm snatch. Your score was your max in each thing combined with your partners. This was the most ridiculous event. I can’t even tell you how far we got and I only remember my snatch was 50lbs. We never do one arm snatches in the gym and I think this was an extremely dangerous event to have at a competition. My partner and I agree to not push ourselves too hard before we even got there. Better to be uninjured and lose, than injure ourselves and probably still lose. Again, I want to make this clear, this was the stupidest exercise they could have had.

Our third event was a thruster relay at 1:30. We were the only heat going and everyone was watching our group of 6 teams. It was set up that partner one goes in each section then partner two:

30 meter dumbbell farmers carry  (15lbs)
15 dumbbell thrusters
30 meter dumbbell farmers carry

4 facing the bar burpees
30 meter kettle bell farmers carry  (18lbs)
12 kettle bell thrusters
30 meter kettle bell farmers carry

4 facing the bar burpees
30 meter over the head bar carry (45lbs)
9 thrusters
30 meter over the head bar carry

We finished in 6:15. It may not have been the fastest, but I was extremely happy with this time. I am no longer sore from this event and I am really happy I did it. We obviously didn’t make the finals. I wish the one arm snatch wasn’t there, but oh well, it was fun.

Positive Thinking and Summer Goal Setting

I’m a slacker when it comes to running. I’ll get very passionate and goal-oriented then one day, it’s gone and I’m back to slacking. I am not really sure why I lose motivation other than I usually just end up talking myself out of the mileage or even the run in its entirety by the end of the day. I have only pulled myself from bed early on a Saturday morning once since before my half marathon when it wasn’t for a race and I only ran two miles.

What is wrong with me? What happened to all the drive I have had in the past. I got into a short relationship (about 2.5 months, barely worth counting) and my entire schedule has been thrown off. With summer quickly approaching I’m left wondering what do I do? The answer once again magically seemed to appear in Runner’s World this month. There was an article relating to positive thinking. How ironic that many of the problems the runner described in the article are things I struggle with. She listed the fears she feels while running a race, like that she can’t maintain this pace and focusing on the time and distance rather than how she feels. I am constantly doubting my body’s ability to do what I’m asking it to do. When I was being pushed by Brianne during my most recent 10-K, holding a pace well below my normal pace was easy.

It’s mental blocks most of the time that get me. I’m too tired/hungry/sore to carry on. I can’t breathe. I don’t have time to run. My bed is too comfy. The list could continue but I think you get the point. The article suggested setting goals and positive thinking. Each person will need to find their own way to motivate yourself. With the summer months approaching and the humidity already setting in (South Florida is a literal sauna from end of April through October), I needed a list to get me through the off-season for races.

My positive mantras start today. I WILL run 4 miles today. Even though it will be hot, I will run 4 miles. Even if I have to pant heavily. That’s what I keep telling myself at least. I’ve created a list of summer goals that I will accomplish this summer. It may seem pretty hefty, but as goal-oriented as I am, I need these to complete. I have a page I have added to keep track of these goals as the summer goes on.

Summer Goals: Due Date August 31, 2013

Run at least 4 times a week, every week: I will be posting a recap at the beginning of every week going over if I completed this or not

Run the Run, Sweat and Beers 5-K in under 30 minutes: This is on July 18. My fastest 5-k is just over 34 minutes, and I am confident with the training I’ve put in since then, I can accomplish this

Complete the Loggerhead Triathlon on August 3.:This should be interesting since I currently don’t have a bike and I still can’t really swim

Be able to run 6 miles without stopping: I currently top out at 3.

Be able to run 6 miles in 60 minutes: My last 10-K I averaged 11:12 minute miles. I am fairly confident that I can shave a minute off my mile average in 4 months, since I did it before, but we will see. I want to run my whole marathon at a 10:00 minute mile pace so I better start training now.

That’s all I have for now. I’m sure my crazy mind will think of some other obnoxious goal for me to complete.

The Newbie Chronicles

Recently I started reading articles from the “Newbie” in the Runners World magazine. I started with this month’s issue where he wrote an article about the first marathon he ran. It was a rather long article, but I laughed the entire time I was reading it. Everything he said was spot on to how I feel when I’m running.

My favorite part of this article is the zombie portion. There are times when I am probably moving no faster than an upbeat walk but I feel as though I am breaking the sound barrier. This happens quite a bit on my long runs, about the last quarter mile or so when I crank it up and head to the end. I have run right past many friends and family without even noticing them trying to be whatever time I had in my head.

I am now in the process of reading all of his past articles. Sometimes I feel like I’m by myself with all of my running issues but his articles make me feel like its not just me. Plus you’re guaranteed a good laugh from reading them. Check them out and read them when you’re having a rough run day. They’ve been helping me.
