My first Crossfit competition

So last Saturday I competed in my first Crossfit competition and let me start by saying I did not do well. We placed 43 out 69. Like I said, we did not do well. That being said, we had a ton of fun.

I dragged my butt out of bed at 6:15am on Saturday morning. I had my bag packed already and my boyfriend was volunteering so we packed some blankets and chairs and headed out. We got down to the event at about 7:20am, set up our area, and I met up with my partner. I would like to point out, it was about the dead in winter in south Florida, a very windy 60 degrees. That may seem warm to some of you, but I can promise you it was freezing and my Floridian blood is thin. Our team name was “Where’s The Wine” and the events were in alphabetical order so we were in the last heat every time. Our first workout was at 10:30am so we waited around till then. Our first workout was:

50 hurdle hop buy-in each
20 pull-ups (from a box)
30 meter shuttle run
20 pull-ups
20 kettlebell swings (35lbs)
30 meter shuttle run
20 pull-ups
20 kettle bell swings
20 knees over hips
30 meter shuttle run
20 pull-ups
20 kettle bell swings
20 knees over hips
20 kettle bell goblet lunges
50 deadlifts (85lbs)

We finished in 8:43. I thought that was a good time but not great. Our second event was at 12:15 and was max distance broad jump and max 1 arm snatch. Your score was your max in each thing combined with your partners. This was the most ridiculous event. I can’t even tell you how far we got and I only remember my snatch was 50lbs. We never do one arm snatches in the gym and I think this was an extremely dangerous event to have at a competition. My partner and I agree to not push ourselves too hard before we even got there. Better to be uninjured and lose, than injure ourselves and probably still lose. Again, I want to make this clear, this was the stupidest exercise they could have had.

Our third event was a thruster relay at 1:30. We were the only heat going and everyone was watching our group of 6 teams. It was set up that partner one goes in each section then partner two:

30 meter dumbbell farmers carry  (15lbs)
15 dumbbell thrusters
30 meter dumbbell farmers carry

4 facing the bar burpees
30 meter kettle bell farmers carry  (18lbs)
12 kettle bell thrusters
30 meter kettle bell farmers carry

4 facing the bar burpees
30 meter over the head bar carry (45lbs)
9 thrusters
30 meter over the head bar carry

We finished in 6:15. It may not have been the fastest, but I was extremely happy with this time. I am no longer sore from this event and I am really happy I did it. We obviously didn’t make the finals. I wish the one arm snatch wasn’t there, but oh well, it was fun.

The New Year

Ringing in the new year always seems to promise hope of a new tomorrow, and a new way of life. The simple fact of it is though, that the same concerns/issues/setbacks will still be present in the morning. Resolutions are great, as long as you put them into practice.

Today marks exactly two weeks since New Year’s Eve. Last night, I went out for girl’s night where we discussed a couple of our resolutions. 13 days into the new year and they were already falling apart. I refuse to let mine fall apart. 2016 is a new and exciting year for me and my resolutions are part of it. I am doing great at work, started school pursuing something I actually enjoy learning about, and my running has never been better. I don’t have too many resolutions, but they are:

  1. Pay off debt (isn’t this everyone’s resolution?)
  2. Run the Twin Cities Marathon in Minneapolis, MN on October 9, 2016
  3. Run the Space Coast Half Marathon in under 2:10:00
  4. Save $7,000 in addition to retirement savings

I wasn’t lying, I only have four. But they will be four that I complete (unless I tragically break my ankle and can’t run, I’ll be running that dang marathon).

So I ask you, what will you do with your “fresh start”?

Eating Well on a Budget

I am an anomaly amongst most people my age. My boyfriend and I stay in (almost) every night and I cook dinner (almost) every night which leads to us having leftovers for lunch (almost) every day. At (almost, ha) 26, the fact that I even know how to cook is so strange among most young people I know. Eating out can be expensive, and terrible for you. We live on a $300 a month food budget. Yes, I said $300 a month. For two extremely active people who enjoy steak quite often and have meat with every meal.

I have seen countless blog posts about families of 4 living on $200 a month for food. While this is entirely possible, I have noticed a lot of those meal plans consist of pasta and lots of couponing. I’ve tried couponing, I have no time or patience for it. Florida doesn’t allow you to double coupons either, which makes real savings difficult. All of these things let me to make this post: How to eat well on a budget. I have listed the tricks I use to keep us in shape and under budget

1. Trader Joe’s: Trader Joe’s just opened in South Florida last year and I am obsessed. I have been a Publix girl all my life, but I have saved so much money shopping at Trader Joe’s. Not only is Trader Joe’s less expensive for so many things, but they have less items in their stores, which means not as many random purchases when I see something I want. Trader Joe’s, you are my savior and I am forever loyal to you.

2. Costco: If you do not have a membership to a bulk store, get yourself one immediately. I do not have personal experience with Sam’s Club or BJ’s, but Costco has great prices on everything from car tires to chicken breast. They sell plenty of organic food there as well and their fruit and vegetable selection is amazing. If you eat meat frequently, Costco is the place to go.

3. Fruit stands: Florida is full of fruit stands. I can go and get bags of fruits and vegetables for $15 They go bad quicker than ones from say, Publix, but they’re ripe, delicious and inexpensive.

4. Meal plan: This seems like common sense, but meal planning is extremely helpful to keep your budget down. Again, it reduces the amount of unnecessary purchases.

5. Stay away from Whole Foods!: This may stir up some controversy. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love going into Whole Foods. It makes me feel like I have this healthy lifestyle thing on lock and I feel fancy. But let’s face it, Whole Foods is in no way price conscious. Just stay away.

2014 is over?

Am I the only one who feels like 2014 just started? I’m pretty sure it was just January yesterday. It was a crazy year, full of crazy adventures. I traveled around the country for work, qualified for an incentive trip to Aruba and went, moved in with the boy, moved to a new place with the boy, transferred jobs and hit some of my fitness goals. Here’s a quick fitness recap:

  1. Ran a half marathon under 2:30:00 (2:23:01 to be exact)
  2. Ran a 5-K under 30:00 (29 and change but still!)
  3. PR’ed in a 10-K as well (the year of PR’s!)
  4. joined an amazing gym and I can feel my body changing everyday

2014 was a great year. It had its ups and downs, but overall no complaints. I cannot wait for 2015. I have some amazing things planned. We’re heading over to Ft. Myers tonight after work to ring in the new year there. Should be an interesting night!

As I reflect on the previous year and look forward to 2015, I do have some resolutions I would like to accomplish:

  1. Run a half under 2:00:00
  2. Run a 5-K under 27:00
  3. Do 10 pull-ups in a row
  4. Get a muscle-up
  5. Blog at least 3 times a week

Nothing too substantial, but still it’s something. Happy new year, ya goons!

The Pursuit of Happiness, aka an 8:30 mile

I ran an 8:40 mile. I would like to repeat myself: I ran an 8:40 mile. Yes that is right, I am just 10 seconds off my goal for that ever elusive 8:30 mile. Monday after our workout, that is what I ran. I was so happy I could cry. I didn’t because I thought I was going to throw up/pass out because it was also 92 degrees outside.

Tuesday we did our workout and a recovery jog. Yesterday we did not get our workout in because we went out into the sticks to shoot some guns and drive around on the ATV and that was an all day affair. My arms are so sore from holding up a gun all day (I’m not a very large girl). I am currently sitting here, counting the seconds until I can leave and head to the gym. I think my obsession is at an all time high…

More to come! I’m getting a little better at this blogging thing. Maybe I’ll put up some playlists and a few of my favorites as time progresses. My computer at home is not the best so I don’t have too many playlists right now…

Weekly Recap

I suck at blogging regularly, I know. But, I have my weekly recap. Eventually I will get better with this nonsense…

Monday: Day 1 in the pool! I have officially recruited a triathlon trainer. He is currently in the process of teaching me how to swim properly. This is a hefty task, especially considering when I first got in the pool he told me that I wasn’t necessarily the worst swimmer he’s seen. By the end of the hour, he was very impressed at my improvement! 

That evening I taught kickboxing.

Tuesday: I missed my scheduled run but I did teach an endurance class for my Cycle class that day. It was a lot of climbing with a whole song at 100% at the end

Wednesday: Taught the endurance class again first thing in the morning. That afternoon I went to my track workout with my trainer. It was just over 92 degrees with high humidity and direct sunlight so the workout was easier than usual. I jogged a mile warm up; 3 laps jogging the curves and running the straights; 1/2 mile for time; 1/4 mile time; 2 100m sprints. I felt like I may die at the end

Thursday: taught the endurance spin class again in the morning. See a pattern?

Friday: Day off!

Saturday: 6 mile run at about 11 minute pace. It was a great run. Can’t wait for 7 next week!

Sunday: Rest day due to rain.

I will get better blogging! I have been extremely motivated recently (except about teaching kickboxing, I still don’t enjoy it) and I really feel like I can run my full marathon at under a 10 min per mile pace. Here’s to 4 1/2 months of working my bum off to get there!

This week will go as such:

Monday: swim in the morning, kickbox in the evening

Tuesday: 4 mile run then teaching spin

Wednesday: swim in the morning, track in the evening

Thursday: spin in the am and either a run, bike or dancing in the evening

Friday: group workout with the triathlon group and run after work

Saturday: 7 mile long run under 75 minutes and then the Zoo !!! (I know this doesn’t pertain to exercise but I am so excited)

Sunday: 18 mile bike ride (eek!)

The Color Run – Ft. Lauderdale

This was my second Color Run experience. The first one was in Miami on October 21 (day before my birthday!) and that was a totally different experience. Miami was over an hour drive from my house and Ft. Lauderdale is under 45 minutes. Parking in Miami was a disaster while Ft. Lauderdale was a breeze. Finally, the Miami course was through a park and Ft. Lauderdale was through the city in the downtown area.

I woke up at about 5:45am on Sunday morning, through my clothes on and ran out the door to meet Ariel to head down to Ft. Lauderdale. We stopped at Burger King for some fuel (of course) and grabbed a parking spot in the first garage we went in. We paid to park, which I thought was outrageous, and headed down to meet our third runner, Nicole. We named the team Running for the Border in honor of Cinco de Mayo. We took our white pre race photos and tried to track down the Runicorn (it was a guy dressed up in a unicorn costume to take pictures) but failed.

We headed over to the starting corral as soon as possible. In Miami, parking was so difficult it took forever for us to get over to the start corral. When we finally did, it took about 40 minutes to get to a group to start. This time, we were in the very first corral! With the Runicorn! Ariel and I took an easy run since we had just run the half marathon last weekend but we still lost Nicole pretty early on. There were just so many people! I made sure to get lots of color this time because I didn’t get much in Miami. We hit orange first, then yellow, blue and pink was last. The course was quick and easy, except one part where we went down into a tunnel and had to run uphill to get out of it. As you all know, I HATE hills.

We finished with a time of about 40:03. It’s not a timed run and we took it pretty easy to enjoy the color, so I think it’s not too shabby. Nicole finished right after we did and met us at the designated meet area. We grabbed our color packets and headed down to the color festival to throw our color in the air. It was then that I found the Runicorn and finally snapped a picture!

I had a fantastic time at the Color Run in Ft. Lauderdale. We headed home after snagging a Nesquik and when I got home, I decided picking up my white cat would be a good idea. He obviously wasn’t very pleased with that.

Packet Pick-up: A breeze! I got right in to pick it up on my way to Miami for some fitness workshops. I picked up all three packets in about 5 minutes.

The Medal: No medal here, just color

The Swag: Not a very good picture but there were temporary tattoos, a shirt, a sweatband and a color packet for after the race

The Good: Everything! The course, the organization, the runicorn, the amount of color. Couldn’t have gone any better.

The Bad: Paying for parking! It’s my biggest pet peeve. I already paid to run the race.

The Ugly: Nothing ugly here. I was very impressed in comparison to the Miami race.

Overall it was a fantastic way to spend my Cinco de Mayo!
